General Conduct

Lurk before posting!
We understand that you are eager to contribute to Co-Labor8, but take some time beforehand to learn the rules of our community. We have tried our best to divide the forums in such a manner that their names and descriptions will give you an idea of what topics are most suitable for each forum. Be sure you have the appropriate forum before posting. If there is no forum dedicated to the topic you wish to discuss, please use the “Off-Topic” forum. Do NOT post pornography or any "questionable" material. If you would be uncomfortable viewing it at work or at your parents' house, do not post it here. Additionally, please check to see if your post has already been posted before by another Co-Labor8 member.

Before you post:
Before posting, please ask yourself the following question: "Am I making a post which is either constructive, informative, or interesting on any level?" If you can answer "yes" to this, then please post. If you cannot, then refrain from posting.

Before you reply:
Before replying, please ask yourself the following question: "Does my reply offer any significant advice or help contribute to the conversation in any fashion?" If you can answer "yes" to this, then please reply. If you cannot, then refrain from replying.

Posting Rules

Introduction Posts:
Upon joining the forums, do not create a thread announcing your arrival to the world. Co-Labor8 aims to be a global and inclusive community. We do not need each individual member to announce their arrival to our forums. The database thanks you for your compliance.

Non-English Language Posts:
Currently, the primary language of all Co-Labor8 moderators is English. We ask that you please use English in your posts outside of any localized forums. If you must post in a general area in another language, please label your thread title as such.

Flimsy First Posts:
Do not rush to be the first to reply to a thread. Take your time to review the entire original post before replying. It's not a race and doesn't matter who posts where.

Low Content Posts:
Please do not make posts containing no content (ie, "first post," any catchphrase, or something else completely void of meaning). These just litter up the forums and though they give our administration team something to do, we need to eliminate these as much as possible.

Derails:
Do not derail threads by proclaiming why the original post was worthless, or by steering the discussion in a completely unrelated direction. If you think a thread isn't worth contributing to, move on.

Worthless Posts:
We do not care if you are drunk or high; please do not inform us of either. Please do not register gimmick accounts and make posts as a gimmick, as they are not funny. Please do not post spam asking us to vote for you on some website, give you referrals for free iPods / flatscreens / spare tires, or any other semi-spammy things. Do not use the forums to trick folks into making you money; we will ban you for it.

Digital Harassment:
Don't mess with the forums or any user on the forums. If you post a malicious link (any URL with spyware or code designed to annoy people) you will be banned. Do not make plans to annoy / destroy other forums.

Professional Courtesy:
We aim to have all members of our community work together to create collaborative work. Some of our users are actually professionals in the subject areas about which they speak. Please respect the forums and those around you by not starting flame wars and arguing non-constructively or about off-topic matters in collaboration forums.

Respect the Mods:
The moderators are here to keep the forums safe, sane, and secure. Please do not harass or intentionally annoy the mods. If they ask you to do something, please do it. If you do not like the mods or the moderation here, then feel free to not post here.

Personal Arguments:
If somebody is harassing you on the forums then discuss it with them over PM or email before contacting an admin about it. Flames and insults do not constitute harassment. Please do not post others' personal information (phone number, addresses, emails, etc.). Try to stay out of other peoples' personal lives as well. Keep in mind there's a good distinction between the Internet and real life, and the position of "Internet Detective" has been played out.

Image / File Rules

Keep all images work-safe.
As a general rule, ask yourself "would my mother and boss be comfortable viewing this image?" when posting pictures. If you feel the need to post any pornographic or disgusting images, do it elsewhere.

Image size:
There is no reason that images should approach 1000 pixels in width when displayed inside a thread. Use linked thumbnails when possible.

Image linking:
Make sure all images are hosted on your own webspace. We do not approve of bandwidth leeching and forcing other people to pay for your images.

“No Warez/Cracks/Serials/Pay Fonts.”
This is a collaborative forum where users are coming together to work constructively. Requesting someone’s intellectual property without respect and compensation undermines the ideals of the Creative Commons license that is the cornerstone of this project. The moderation team has zero tolerance for any requests that involve trying to find someone to help you break international copyright law. There are more than enough legal ways for you to figure out how to contribute to the project, don’t break the law.

Your sig file and you.
Keep in mind that everybody on the forums has to see your sig file over and over every time you post. Please make your sig file under 30k in size with no more than three lines of text. Do not use images larger than 400 pixels wide and 125 pixels high.

If you're posting nudes, check with a mod first.
The moderation team appreciates art. We understand that nudes can be art. As such, we're pretty laid back about that kind of stuff so long as you aren't trying to post porn or looking for an excuse to showcase your girlfriend. Try to keep nude drawings and stuff linked and tagged with NWS (“Not work safe”) tags as well.

Don't post every doodle you make.
Before you post something, consider whether or not it's actually worth posting. Quick drawings from your dedicated sketchbook are fine. Doodles in the margins of your algebra homework usually aren't.

People may make visual corrections to your work here.
Sometimes more information can be conveyed in a simple mark-up or re-crop than can be conveyed in a reasonable amount of text. This is not an affront to your artistic vision. You have not been violated. This is, and has been, a standard practice among artists for centuries. It is also one of the key elements of Project Co-Labor 8. If you do not wish to have others make changes to your work, don't contribute.

You know someone with a scanner or a decent digital camera.
Yes, you do. Your cell phone or webcam is not an ideal way to display your drawings or paintings to the world. If you must use a low-quality camera to show us something, at least pin the piece to the wall, stabilize the camera on something, and turn on all the lights in the room. The more professional your presentation is, the more people will respond to it.

If you are copying an existing work or design, you had better tell us.
If you don't, and we find out, we will probably ban you. We have nothing against copying for practice, unless it's passed off as original work. "Well I didn't actually say it was my design" isn't going to get you off the hook. If you don't disclose your sources, we can only assume that you are representing the work as your own.

Learn to take criticism.
Welcome to the Internet. If your idea is unoriginal, you'll get told as much. If it's good, you'll be told the same. Chances are you'll get a little good and a little bad, since that's typically how people feel. The advantage to an online format is that people can be honest and really not care about politics or hurting feelings. Appreciation should be a side effect, not a cause for posting.

Don't be a jerk.
In the scope of a good critique, pretty much anything goes (outside of obviously hateful/malicious comments). On the other hand, being a jerk for no good reason is a grand way to get probated.

Responding to critiques.
If you respond to a critique, it should go something like this:
Quote:
“Thank you for taking time to look at my work – while I agree with most of what you said, I'm not sure if you got the point of such-and-such part and I'd like to explain why.”

Even if you don't agree with the critique, show some respect, especially if they clearly put some thought into what they said. People are more than willing to help, but if you don't show some appreciation, you are not going to get much help.

Crazy Catchall:
Please do not try to cleverly circumvent some rule listed here. These rules are general guidelines and are very flexible.
